Houndstooth is a duotone textile pattern characterized by broken checks or abstract four-pointed shapes. Often the colors are in black and white, but although other colours are used. Color combinations in black and white, in brown and tan, or other earthtone weaves, are very popular designs in tweed materials used for sport coats and other casual clothing. Houndstooth is a common design in casual hats and caps, perhaps most notable in the deerstalker, the kind of cap seen so often in illustrations and portrayals of Sherlock Holmes. Most of the time the pattern was originated in woven wool, but now it used in many other materials as well. At Alexander McQueens’s Fall Collection in 2009 which was called “Horn of Plenty” oversized houndstooth patterns were also employed prominently. The patterns were a reference to Christian Dior’s signature tweed suits.

The houndstooth cape is the eyecatcher of the whole outfit. I got it on my inspirational fashion trip to New York in October 2013 where I had to research for my final diploma collection. The cape sticks out through the contrasting colors black and white! The pattern is super trendy at the moment. As well I really fell in love with my new bag from Stella McCartney! A must-have!
